Steve Jobs returns...

I have been a keen follower of Steve Jobs for some time now. He is a great leader, innovator, speaker and a hard fighter...

After fighting a near death experience, he not only survived it after his liver transplant but also recovered and made his first major public appearance at the Apple keynote event last week.

Though he sported his usual attire (blue jeans and black roundneck T-shirt), he looked distinctly pale and weak.

Nevertheless he showed that he is still well in control of Apple and his address had all the typical elements of his well-known presentation skills.

On Children by Kahlil Gibran

I was reading 'My Country, My Life' - autobiography of India's former Home Minister and top-most leader of Bharatiya Janata Party. The book is an excellent read with quotes, thoughts and lines from various eminent personalities from various walks of life.

One of them was a poem by Kahlil Gibran - On Children.

I know very little about Kahlil Gibran's life and work but am now interested to know more after reading the poem, which goes as follows:

On Children by Kahlil Gibran

Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls,

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,

which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them,

but seek not to make them like you.

For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

देश माझा, मी देशाचा

नुतकेच मी लालक्रुष्ण अडवाणी यांचे ’देश माझा, मी देशाचा’ हे आत्मचरित्र वाचले. खूप दिवसांनी एक चांगले राजकीय आत्मचरित्र वाचायला मिळाले. तसा मी संघ किंवा भाजप च्या विचारसरणीशी सहमत नाही...किंबहुना विरोधातच आहे. पण तरिही अडवाणी मला नेते म्हणून आवडतात. २००९ लोकसभा निवडणुकीसाठी त्यांच्या पुण्यातल्या प्रचारसभेलाही मी गेलो होतो - भाजपला मत देणार नाही ह्याची खात्री असूनही :)

ह्या आत्मचरित्राचा मी मराठी अनुवाद वाचला...त्यामुळे तो मूळ पुस्तका ईतका चांगला आणि नेमका आहे की नाही हे सांगता येत नाही, पण काही ठिकाणी ईंग्रजीतून मराठीत भाषांतर करताना आशय किंवा लेखन शैलीतील गंमत/ मूळ उद्देश हरवला आहे की काय असा संशय येतो...पण असे किरकोळ प्रमाणात घडले आहे

एक ठळकपणे जाणवलेली गोष्ट म्हणजे - जवाहरलाल नेहरु आणि महात्मा गांधी यांचा उल्लेख (चांगल्या बाबतीत) अनेकदा आला आहे...विशेषतः महात्मा गांधी यांचा, त्यांच्या विचारांचा... भाजपा आणि जनसंघाच्या अनेक नेत्यांपेक्षा खूप जास्त प्रमाणात.

अजून एक जाणवलेली गोष्ट म्हणजे (खरं तर माझ्यासाठी आश्चर्यकारक!) अडवाणींचे वाचन चौफेर आहे, नुसते वाचनच नाही तर विचार ही...विरुद्ध मतप्रवाहाबद्दल नुसताच आकस बाळगणे आणि ते समजावून न घेताच टीका करणे ही रा. स्व. सं किंवा भाजप बद्दलची समजूत निदान अडवाणींना तरी लागू होत नाही...त्याचबरोबर त्यांचे जीना यांच्याबद्दलचे ’मवाळ’ विचार/ वक्तव्य हे राजकीय डावपेचाचा भाग नसून खरच प्रामाणीक मत असावे असेही वाटते.

आणि त्याचेच एक निदर्शक म्हणजे त्यांनी पुस्तकात खलील जिब्रान, चीनी तत्ववेत्ता कन्फ्युशियस, बर्ट्रांड रसेल आणि साहीर लुधियानवी पासून स्वामी विवेकानंद, लोकमान्य टिळक, जवाहरलाल नेहरु, महर्षी अरविंद योगी आणि महात्मा गांधींपर्यंत अनेकांचे विचार, वचने आणी ओळी जागोजागी वापरल्या आहेत.

उदा: खालील महात्मा गांधींच्या काही ओळी ह्या एका प्रकरणाची सुरुवात म्हणून वापरल्या आहेत.
